Monday

feel the music

i am hoping to do some recording tonight.
i want to re-record 'deep unkind', without the silly synths.
simple guitars, and maybe i can persuade Mr K to play with his lovely orchestra for it, one day...

hmmm...

well, i've had thise New Post window open for about 10 minutes, and I can't remember, for the life of me, what I was going to post. So screw it.
Here's a link to a pony.

Link.

he's done so much, and he's only 28!

Thursday

too sweet

i don't fully understand it. but it is sooooooo pretty.

these strings cut the deepest

hmm... september is fast passing, and the Good Lady Milk pauses to remind me (once more) that the lovely guitar she gifted me last Christmas still has strings attached.
It was conditional, you see, that I take the Takamine to a public place, and perform songs of the gizo in front of people. I am fast running out of time.

Expect some sort of Ruby's Lounge open mike night madness soon.

I am shaking like a freaking leaf.

el hypocrite?

i just bought fundraiser chocolate from the Cat Protection Society....

Wednesday

BAM!

yeah! it looks like my astute observations regarding Mr Mark Latham have been noticed!
Tomorrow, the world.

thanks Mr Cook, you rock my socks off.

Saturday

oh dear

oh dear indeed. i dont like to poke at people. but this made me quite sad.

Thursday

the good doctor

rememberance. i chipped a tooth the other week, which is nothing to blog about, but i followed it up with a trip to my friendly dentist on Tuesday night.
The Good Doctor Bert is an amazing man. A dentist truly committed to healthy teeth, and a good bite. Spent time in PNG working with the locals, basic dental hygeine. Gave of his own time to go to Thailand to help with the aftermath of the Tsunami.
All in all, when you see The Good Doctor Bert, you get the services of a dentist who doesn't care how you look, just as long as you have healthy, strong teeth and a good bite.
No fancy shite, he pushes no cosmetic dental wagon. He is an honest man.
I highly recommend his services, call me if you want his details. He is, as they would say, the Best Dentist. Ever.

an amazing transmutation

wow. bought The Age today, and there on the front page, was a picture of Mark Latham, looking remarkably like the Emporer Palpatine.

Wednesday

on second thought

no, Eric Matthews' finest moment is 'Dream Figure', from the Cardinal Album.

the guitar tone on this track is spot on. like a solid-state crackle, slightly overdriven. with thee slayer hippy's enigmatic drum-fills, a deeply meaningful bass line (probably Eric, I guess), and the wonderful, Ripe-esque 4 notes of solo/outtro.
And the lyric - broody and beautiful, delivered with a gentle airiness, included here in full for your perusal.

lies ain't beautiful and the stains seem almost visible
and if I've fallen down again don't lift me up I'd like to taste my sin
rains, wash them all away
tears don't cross my face, the boy has vanished without a trace
and if you knew just where I'd been you'd notify my next of kin
pain, let me feel again/come and crack my head/so soon I'll pass for dead
games yell laughable, yours the same but not quite beautiful
and if fame burns me down again, don't pick me up I like my flesh my skin
rains, wash you all away/sickened found out gaze/broken wind down phase
pain, let me feel again/come and crack my head

for the common man...

"where's the music!?", i hear you all screaming. i have been rather lax with my promise of daily songs.
here's another that' spinning on the old wedding CD.
Artist: Eric Matthews
Album: It's heavy in here
Song: Fanfare

Okay. I just realised i will be delving into a subset of songs here. 'first tracks from debut releases'. Keep it in mind.

This is the first track from the debut release from Eric Matthews (surprise, surprise). Before this, he had collaborated with Richard Davies on the Quite-Possibly-Best-Album-EVER; Cardinal (available at empyrean records)
Eric took his smooth voice, and buried it in lush orchestrations. While he doesn't have the genius-gene that glows all around Richard Davies, he does have a great sense of lush. He's probably the perfect accompianist to genius.
This song, Fanfare, is Eric at his finest, shame it was the first track on the first album. Big guitars, smooth smooth vocals, and a trumpet line to die for.
I have no idea what any of his lyrics are on about, but that just adds to the mystery.
More on the music. He has injected some great drive into this track. Pleasantly distorted guitars, the well timed stop-starts in the drums, the clever bass lines. Again with the trumpets. And the gentle acoustic reprise at the end of the album. I like the reprise effect, and I shall try to incorporate it into my life.

hail, northerners!

wow. i am really digging this whole webstats adventure. it seems that aside from the lovely crumpet and mr crumpet, i am also getting visits from the north of our wonderful brown land.
so howdy to you folks from above the murray. let me just say how wonderful i think it is up there, north of the border.
you know, one of my relatives (several generations back on my mother's side) went north. so it must be good.
some of my best friends grew up over the border, honestly.

Tuesday

hello crumpeters!

oooh...
i just bothered to check my webstats... and lordy my, i saw a whole bunch of sweet young folks popping over from the lovely crumpet's blog.
so just on the off chance yr still lurking, unperturbed by my crapulence, i'd like to take the opportunity to say 'hello!'

hello.

giving way

so, i give way to temptation...
here is a snippet of the new song. (still no audio skills)
the beauty of the chase, by (sresreveR eht)?

the beauty of the chase/girl it's where you've been
the mystery of yr face/i can hold within

and you can say what you like to my back/but i'm not over you
and you can try, if you like, to be free/but i'm not over you

yeah, it's pretty much an excerpt from gizo's Lyrica Generica, but it sounds nice in context

wrote a song

yep.
recorded it too.
on my 4-track. used the Only Mic Left in the House, put the maton straight in, and monitored on my cd walkman earbuds (my koss headphones are malting).
it's pretty. and no, you can't hear it, because i still haven't found my RCA->3.5ml converty lead, so there is no PC/Audio interaction, anywhere.
The only noise we get from my PC is a sort of grinding whirring sound. yum.

Monday

bring back the pop

so. i've pretty much failed on the whole song-blogging thing.
but i am back to give it another crack.
i've been listening to the compilation that myself and The Good Lady Milk made for our wedding.
the artist: Elliott Smith
the album: Either/Or (probably his finest, in my opinion (with the exception of the punch&judy song, which i still don't really get))
the song: say yes

everything about this song is simple: the guitar, the voice, the sentiment.
it's all straightforward, and amazingly beautiful.

i'm in love with the world through the eyes of a girl who's still around the morning after...

... and i want to die

yeah. i had a nasty bout of self-hate on the weekend. nasty.

that's it. no clever joke. no puns. just self-loathing, and sadness.
i could keep it like a secret, but as they say 'the hidden cracks that don't show, they constantly just grow'
so that's it. sometimes i am filled with utter loathing for myself. it's a good thing that i am surrounded by so many beautiful people. truly.

Thursday

self-promotion

so last night, we (the steinbecks) were sans Jerry Rinse, so we did a bit more work on what may be our first real recording for the new album. the track is called, well, i can't even tell you. let's just say that it's got nice sounding acoustic guitar (through a valve mic and a pair of pencils), a regular bass (with phase) and some great vocals.
i got my first shot at punching in+out+in+out. it was unexpectedly fun. it was great to be able to talk to josh, and help him through some of the trickier bits... i may have crap ears, but i enjoyed the personal side of being an engineer...
yay!

Wednesday

some band

some band, from geelong, pub rock kind of band.
don't know their name, early nineties.
one of their songs, don't know it's name.
has the line dont f**k with me, i've had a c**t of a day!

that's where the last few days of songs have gone

Sunday

we suck, but we rock

yeah.
i was visiting the incredible house of Crump tonight. Mrs Milk was busy with the Ladies, so poor Lady Crump was alone, and knitting up a storm.
i was left in the mess room with Paulos Paulos, and we pretended not to suck completely at music.
then Lady Crump made us stop being shit and fed us the most lovely banana curry and made us coffee.
we returned to the mess room, i grabbed Atredes the Red, Paulos grabbed Ator, then exchanged for the Rosella (?Tregard the Wanderer?) and we started not being as shit as we once were at an earlier stage of the evening. we have a verse (which is kitsch), and a chorus (which is cliche rock) and a bassline which plomps along happily.
WE ARE ON THE ROAD TO ROCK DOMINATION!

Thursday

no songs thanks, we're british

well, not really.
i am on holiday, so i can't be sausaged with the whole songblog thing.
but i was listening to 'sumday' by grandaddy today, they have some hit singles on that cd. pretty eletro-pop. wheeee

i am now in love

the other night, me and the lovely K watched a quite good low budget kiwi film, called scarfies. but i am not here to talk about the film. i am a shit film critic. i thought it was okay, the plot and script had weak spots, but.. well, i'm not on about the film anywho.....
the thing that struck me most about the film was the music. i am now in love with new zealand pop music. there is something pretty special about it. so much so that i just ordered two minisnap (side project of the bats) ep's, from a happy little kiwi record store, where i shall return, no doubt.
i like to think that i am getting in touch with my ancestors, so i will listen to more NZ pop, and eat more pasta.
